Cosray

The Mawson Cosmic Ray observatory (Cosray) contains telescopes which detect and measure cosmic rays coming from outside our solar system. It has a shaft going down in the rock to a vault to a second set of telescopes and also some seismic detection equipment. Click on the image to the left for a larger version.

Pump house

The pump house is where hot water is pumped down to the melt bell in a cavern in the adjacent ice, melted water is then pumped back out to the water supply building. Click on the image to the left for a larger version.

Water supply building

The water supply building contains two large water tanks which hold the water pumped through site services from the pump house. Enough water is always kept in the tanks to be able to fight a fire. Click on the image to the left for a larger version.

Clean air lab

The clean air lab houses instruments used to monitor the contents of the air blowing down off the Antarctic Plateu. Click on the image to the left for a larger version.

Aeronomy

Aeronomy is the home to Atmospheric Space Physics (ASP). When observing conditions are right, the ASP Engineer / Physicist operates instruments that study the earths upper atmosphere, and space weather. Click on the image to the left for a larger version.

Old station buildings

These are the old station buildings which were constructed when the base was first founded. One building is now used as the gym, the sleeping quarters are now empty, and the carpenter has finished moving from the Weddell hut (Chippies) to Rosella. ANARESat Dome

The ANARESat dome houses a large satellite dish which is our link to the outside world. It carries telephone and data so we can call home and connect to the Internet.. Click on the image to the left for a larger picture in a new window.

EVS

The Emergency Vehicle Shelter (EVS) is where the fire Hagglunds and all the fire fighting equipment is stored. Search and Rescue (SAR) equipment is also stored here. For relaxing there is also a spa and sauna. Click on the image to the left for a larger picture in a new window.

Living quarters

The "Red Shed" is the main living quarters. Besides each expeditioners own rooms there are bathrooms, a laundry, recreation area, bar, medical suite (surgery, wards and medical and doctors office), cinema, kitchen and mess area. Click on the image to the left for a larger picture in a new window.

Sleeping containers

These containers are sleeping accomodation for visitors, or when there is not enough room in the Red Shed.

Wombat

The general science building (known as Wombat) is where the wintering biologists and the AGSO geophysicist work. During 2000, Rhonda has been processing seal scats (poo) which has often made parts of Wombat quite smelly.

Dog run boxes

These boxes are all that remain of the old dog run. Inside the middle box are the pegs for each dog's harness with their names.

Trades Workshop

The trades workshop (known as Red Dwarf) houses all the offices and work area for the trades such as the Diesel mechanics, plumbers and electricians. Located outside are all the dieso's toys such as the Pioneer shown in the picture.

Boat shed

During the summer months when the sea ice has blown out, the Inflatable Rubber Boats (IRB's) are used to travel between Mawson and the surrounding islands. During winter they are stored here along with all the necessary equipment such as life vests and wet suits. Click on the image to the left for a larger picture in a new window.

Rosella

The Rosella building is the carpenters workshop and is so named because of the multi-coloured panels used in it's construction.

Quarry and rock crusher

The quarry is where rock is crushed for use around station. Since Mawson is located on solid rock is it usually not necessary to crush rock very often like it is at other stations (Davis and Casey). At the moment, the quarry just holds a lot of empty half-heigh containers and other equipment. Click on the image to the left for a larger picture in a new window.

Emergency Store

As it's name implies, this container holds food for emergencies, for example if the food in the green store is destroyed. Hopefully nobody will never have to use it!

Gas platform

The gas platform is where we store all the LPG which is used in the kitchen's stoves.

Hydroponics

Hydroponics is where we grow fresh produce. Inside are lamps and heaters to provide light and warmth for the plants to grow. We have successfully cultivated lettuce, cherry tomates, raddish and cucumber.

Main Power House

The Main Power House is where all the electricity for the station is generated. Waste heat from the generators is piped around the station and used to heat the buildings.

Emergency Power House

The emergency power house is a backup to the main power house. It is used in emergencies and when the main power house is being serviced.

Magnetic variometer hut

The Magnetic Variometer hut is a special building that houses sensors that measure and record the changes in the earths magnetic field. It is located away from other buildings in a magnetic quiet zone so that the data it collects is not disturbed.

Wharf

The wharf is where cargo is unloaded during re-supply and where boats are launched when the harbour is free of ice. It is also where the adventurous sometimes go swimming.

Sign post and flags

Near the green store are the signpost, three flagpoles and a bronze bust of Sir Douglas Mawson. Flags a flown on the masts when there are visitors from foreign countries, a ship is in the harbour, or on special occasions such as Anzac Day.

Green store

The green store is one of the buildings that dominates the skyline at Mawson. It where all the dry food and most frozen food is stored. The clothing store, field store and equipment spares are also located here. Inside is a rock climbing wall and open space for games like volleyball.

RTA Containers

All waste that is not burnable is returned to Australia (RTA) in containers such as these. This includes general rubbish, sorted glass, tin and aluminium cans.

Fuel Farm

These two fuel farms contain approximately 760,000 litres of SAB diesel fuel which is used to power the generators and generate electricity. There is also a large collection of 44 gallon drums holding aviation turbine kerosene and petrol for vehicles.

Concrete batching plant

The sun recorder is used to measure the hours of sunlight received every day. When the sun shines it burns a line on the paper behind the glass ball.
The concrete batching plant is used to mix up concrete for construction work. It was heavily used in the rebuilding program in the late 80's but is now

Operations

The operations building houses the Station Leader's office, communications, the post office and the Bureau of Metereology. The Mawson webcam is located on the top of the building. Balloon Shed

The Bureau of Meterology Officers release a sonde twice every day all year round. The balloon shed is where hydrogen filled balloons are inflated and attached to the sonde before release. Click on the image to the left for a larger picture in a new window.

Waste management building

The waste management building is responsible for processing all sewerage and non-toxic liquid waste.

Incinerator Building

The incinerator building contains "Warren" a high temperature fuel fired incinerator which is used to burn all non-RTA or recycleable waste such as kitchen scraps.

HF Transmitters Hut
This is the High Frequency (HF) radio transmitters hut which contains all the high power radio transmitting equipment. HF radio is not used at Mawson very much now, but in past years Mawson was the largest HF radio station in Antarctica and it carried almost all HF radio traffic to the rest of the world.

This is the old Bureau of Meterology Shack. Need to find out some history about it..

Helicopter Pads
The helicopter pads are used fairly infrequently at Mawson. There are three helicopter pads but usually only 2 are used. Sikorsky S76s and AS350BA (Squirrels) are the two main types of helicopters that visit Mawson carrying expeditioners from ships off shore, or on interstation flights to Davis.

Hangar
The aircraft hangar at Mawson is the first of it's type to be built in Antarctica and it was constructed before 1959. It is no longer used to hold aircraft and is now used as a store for building materials.
