The Normal Routine - NightTime (part 3 of 3)
Tuesday 25th April 2000

If you are in the mood for a less cerebral activity then there are the stations video and 16mm film collections. We have quite a lot of ex-rental movies with topics ranging across the spectrum from comedy, and drama to action and documentaries. Each year the station has a budget to buy new videos and music CD's so the collection is gradually increasing all the time. We have a large TV set as well as a video projector to show videos, and this year we have a new surround sound system to help make the cinema live up to it's name! Besides the pre-recorded videos, many friends and relatives of expeditioners send down tapes of programs and shows to remind us what life is like back home.

There is always a view to admire and comfortable chair to read a book in.. tapes.
On Mondays we have been watching Dec '99 / Jan '00 episodes of Southpark, and Futurama. We also have the Today 2000 new years day program which we are looking forward to watching to see how the rest of the world experienced New years eve. While watching the tapes sent down I have rediscovered advertising, and realised how annoying and insulting they are ... That is definitely one part of home I am not looking forward to returning to!

Besides videos, we have a large collection of 16mm films ranging in age from 1940's through to the late 1990's, the latest movie being 'Babe'. On Sunday and Wednesday nights the slushy chooses a movie from the 250+ 16mm films on offer and the projectionist sets up the movie ready for showing at 8pm.

A large video collection to choose from...
The best thing about the 16mm films is the "shorts" which are played before the movie. The shorts are miniature 5 minute documentaries from the 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's. I really like watching them because they provide a very interesting glimpse into the past and often have the authentic "news reel" feel about them. Many of them are very funny to watch mainly from the perspective of changing fashion, attitudes and culture.
Watching videos or 16mm films in the cinema .
Most nights the bar sees activity, especially with the station home-brew beer available and soft drinks We have a post mix soft drink machine with most types of soft drinks available. The temptation is great to refill your glass with another drink - especially when a free postmix machine is within arms reach!

Every few weeks we have a theme night - the latest one was a 70's fashion night. Luckily we have a very large collection of dressup clothes to choose from (a lot of which are from the 70's) so dressing up is not hard. Platforms, flair's, furry chests and dangling necklaces were the most popular - reminding me that fashion 70's decade was definitely not worth remembering!

And when there is no theme night and we still have some energy to burn there's always dancing and just messing about..

Cheers,

Kym
