Where is Mawson and why does the sun not set in summer ? (part 1 of 2)
Saturday 15th January 2000

Hello everybody..

In case you were wondering where Mawson station is in relation to everything else I have found the following map useful to show my location, as well as the reason why there is near constant daylight during summer. It also illustrates well how far Mawson is from the south pole - nearly as far as Perth is from Adelaide! The other manned Australian stations are Davis, Casey and Macquarie Island. At the south geographic pole is the Admunsen-Scott station which is run by the Americans.

The globe shows how Mawson is at the same longitude of India / Pakistan and how we are 4.5 hours behind of Australian Central standard time in summer. The light and dark blue areas indicate the area of the earth that the sun illuminates during summer, while in winter this situation reverses and Antarctica is almost always in dark.
