Xmas and New Years activities at Mawson (part 2 of 4)
Friday 14th January 2000

... continued

A few hundred photos later, Santa sat down and invited everybody to sit on his knee and receive their presents... the next 30 minutes was the most amusing part of Christmas - watching everybody open their present and their expressions on their faces once they say what somebody had made for them. Presents ranged from a bag of old socks (probably the worst present) to beautifully hand crafted wooden bowls, model Seals, brass plaques and hand built can openers.

I was given a number of things - two large black and white pictures of Rock Hopper and King penguins - taken on Macquarie Island, as well as a boomerang, a pocket knife and a ANARE Chefs badge. The last item gave it away as to who gave me the present, so I thanked Gerbil afterwards.

Some people gave their thanks to Santa in unusual ways..
Some of the presents were expertly made - and a lot of time had been spent in their construction. Jason McHale, a sparky, made an excellent milling machine ..
