Hello
from Awesome Mawson!
(part 2 of 2)
Sunday 24th Oct 99
...
continued
For
those of you who have not seen Mawson station, I have attached a
photo taken from "West Arm" which is the western side
of the natural harbour on which the station is located.

I have labelled some of the interesting points. The "Red Shed"
is the accommodation building. My room is located on the top floor
looking to the right of the picture.

Up
the hill is the "Aeronomy" building (also shown in a separate
photo) where most of the Atmospheric Space Physics experiments are
housed. I will be working there by myself during winter, but in
summer I share it with the current ASP Engineer. Across the the
right is the "Cosray" building which I will also be looking
after. Cosray is used for research into Cosmic Ray Physics - particles
arriving from outside our Solar System.

There
are plenty of other buildings dedicated for other jobs - such as
the satellite dish which allows me to send you all this email.
In
the background is Mt Henderson which is a 2 hour drive up onto the
Antarctic Plateau. I will be going up there at some stage this summer,
or over winter.
I
mentioned that all of my cargo came in due to an unfortunate accident.
You
may have heard about it on the radio. Yesterday, we had a SAR (Search
and Rescue) for a expeditioner who had just arrived. She was doing
Quad training (Quads are 4 wheeled motorbikes) and drove into a
crevasse. She was rushed back to the hospital in the Red Shed.
A
doctor was flown out from the Aurora Australis to help the doctor
currently on base, and, this morning they operated to fix some internal
injuries. Luckily, the result is success, and she may be staying
on base to recover. This incident brought home to me (and everybody
else) how remote and isolated we are - as well has how dangerous
Antarctica can be.
That
is one day I will never forget.
Well..
tea is nearly ready, so I will leave it there and write again soon.
Regards
Kym
