Hello from Awesome Mawson! (part 1 of 2)
Sunday 24th Oct 99

Hello Everybody from Awesome Mawson !

Finally ! 12 months and three weeks after applying for the position of Atmospheric Space Physics Engineer at Mawson I am here !

After 2 weeks on the Aurora Australis, and plenty of rocking, rolling, ooohhhing and aaahhhing I was glad to get off the boat. I had a great time on the ship and will not forget it - so I have attached a few pictures showing the seas and ice...

Last Wednesday, I left the Aurora Australis onboard a Sikorsky S76 helicopter and flew for over an hour (160 nautical miles = 296km).

The journey was over sea ice for part of the way, then over "fast" ice (ice that is solid and at least 1 metre thick) before landing at Mawson.

The experience of riding in a helicopter, and over Antarctica would have to be very hard to beat - and then only by actually being here. kym (on the right) in the helicopter
I have attached a photo of the helicopters being assembled before leaving the ship as well as a view from the helicopter (see right) and me in the helicopter.. fast moving ice viewed from the helicopter

I had some worries with all my cargo being brought in on time because the helicopters were grounded for a day due to bad weather, however in the end (and because of unfortunate circumstances), I received all my cargo.
