Breaking
the ICE
Friday 15th Oct 99
Hello
all..
Well,
we're now into the pack ice proper ... standing up on the bridge
all we can see is ice all around. The ship is now in it's "icebreaker
mode" and down on the lower decks we can hear the noise of
the ice scraping along the side of the vessel as it is broken up
and slides down the sides.
We
are also averaging about 2 icebergs per hour, some very large and
some quite small - smaller than the ship. Also, different kinds
of wildlife are appearing - Adelie penguins and Skuas (birds). I
have just been standing outside on the top of the ship where the
air is -4 deg and the sky overcast. I can now understand what a
"white out" is. It is when all around you everything looks
white and there is no horizon. It makes it very difficult to judge
distances, however we are able to predict where all the bergs will
be by using the radar on the bridge, and thus steer around them.
Hopefully
I should be on the fly off in 3-4 days (Monday 18th) but this could
be delayed by 2-3 days depending on the weather
As
for other things on the boat, today there is a Ship's photo with
everybody in it, and tomorrow night there is a 'red faces' night.
The usual 'hair modifications' (trimming, colouring & general
disfigurement) for charity are due to happen soon.. I may (or may
not) show you any pictures !!! :-) (depends on how silly the colour
scheme is)
I
have also been helping out other expeditioners with their computers
- ie
configuring them for email, and networking on the boat. Such are
the jobs of one of only two engineers on board.
So..
the next few days will be quite exciting.. more news to follow...
